Costume/Masks

The masks play a ritualistic role in my work, my life in recent years, and have allowed me to deepen my understanding of the spiritual and thematic themes that influence my practice. A mask/costume can be worn by you, and you can be worn by it. It's a way to forget how you think you should be moving, acting, sounding, and instead flow into whatever instinctual movement comes to you in that moment. I find that wearing a mask is not a hiding, but an embodying of whatever that mask represents.

The Owlman of Mawnan Smith

IThe Owlman is a local legend near Falmouth, originating in the village of Mawnan-Smith and supposedly spotted by a pair of young holiday makers in the graveyard of Mawnan Church. I have been fascinated by this creature since I first heard of it and had the absolute pleasure of making this costume in spring and getting to wear it/see it worn by my partner at the Great Estates Festival 2026. This costume is made almost entirely of recycled materials, as is most of my work! This is technically the second Owlman I've made, though the first costume, and it's final form is far from done.

Medium: A pair of Dickies overalls, tent material, scrap fabric, foam packaging material, paint and various other recycled materials.

The Cult of Mortentra

This was my final project during my MA Prosthetic Effects and was based on my final project during my BA Fine Art. The 'Cult of Mortentra' project contains narrative about a high priestess of Mortentra who undergoes a physical transformation through connection with her eldritch goddess, represented here through silicone and makeup.

Donkey at LAMP

this piece was created as part of a from-scratch mask making workshop I had the privilege and honour of running at the brilliant creative school L.A.M.P in Leamington Spa. Their Theatrical Makeup course was looking at a Midsummer Nights Dream and together we made a veritable herd of donkey headed students to gaze longingly at the queen of the fae.

Wolf Girl

One of the first masks. Crafted in a fever dream during the first year of my BA Fine Art, it sparked something in me and that fire has not gone out.

The Cult Leader

An early mask of mine from my BA Fine Art final year project: The Cult of Mortentra. A narrative art project that explored theology, nature and death within my fine art practise at the time. This mask was a representation of life from death, a merging of remain and new growth from above and below. ~ This photograph was taken by River Orrey, photographer, graphic designer and someone I had the pleasure of studying with at University.

The Oak King

I made the Oak King mask specially for Jacob to wear in the solstice parades in Falmouth, as we jaunt along with the Oss, Pen Mor, and all the other spectral and witchy beasts and beings that dance upon the thinning solstice veil.
